Welcome to FlexNets Projects Page
FlexNets (Flexible Wireless Systems & Networks) is an open source initiative that explores and tries to leverage the flexibility of radio communication systems. This flexibility is based on the SDR concept and incorporates cognitive radio approaches and strategies. Resource management at all layers of the radio system-hardware, software, service, etc.-is an important issue that FlexNets addresses.
The mission of FlexNets is easing the design, development, and deployment of new radio environments. It facilitates sharing hardware and software resources, introducing and testing real-time algorithms or strategies. FlexNets is divided into several subprojects, each one of them related with another aspect of flexibility. The following projects are currently in progress:
- ALOE?: Abstraction Layer & Operating Environment (previously PHAL-OE, Platform and Hardware Layer Operating Environment) is a lightweight software layer that incorporates abstraction layer and execution environment functionalities for a cluster of heterogeneous processors, including GPPs, DSPs, and FPGAs. It facilitates the deployment of software modules, running on different processors while ensuring that real-time constraints will be met. It also provides mechanisms for monitoring and managing the available computing resources.
- ModRCommHW?: Modular Radio Communication HWardware is a repository of hardware designs that are freely available.
- RTCCommCL: Real-Time Computing Communication Cluster is an cluster of heterogeneous processors that permits testing newly developed waveforms and management strategies or algorithms. It consists of Linux PCs, Sony Play Stations (PS3) running Linux, and DSPs (TI's C64XX DSK boards). This cluster can be remotely loaded via the ALOE framework.
- FlexWaves: Flexible Radio Waves is a repository folder of available software modules for different radio waveforms. UMTS and WiMAX are currently available.
- FlexCRM: Flexible Computing Resource Management for SDR systems focuses on the development of a complete computing resource management (CRM) framework that addresses the computing resource management issues of heterogeneous multiprocessor platforms and the real-time computing requirements of waveforms.
